Public Investment for the Long Term: The Case of Urban Transportation
February 10, 2016 | By Public Policy Admin |
This past year, the annual SPPG Policy Institute brought experts in urban transportation together to discuss solutions for the long term.
The 2016 SPPG Policy Institute brings together those who study the politics and economics of long‐term public investment with experts in the field of urban transportation. It begins with an exploration and discussion of what we know about the electoral, cognitive and institutional constraints on investing for the long term. Informed by these broader perspectives, the discussion will turn to the case of urban public transportation. The issue has current traction in electoral politics at the federal, provincial and municipal levels but also a long history of policy inertia in the Canadian context. Our focus will be on understanding how Canadian cities compare with peer cities internationally in meeting transportation challenges through public policy, and what we can learn from international experience.
