On November 27, Spectrum hosts Reverend Dr. Cheri DiNovo and Dr. Nick J. Mulé to talk LGBTQ+ issues in government.

Spectrum at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy is excited to host LGBTQ+ policy and advocacy leaders Reverend Dr. Cheri DiNovoand Dr. Nick J. Mulé for a conversation on the past, present, and future of LGBTQ+ issues in government.

During her 11 years as a Member of the Provincial Parliament of Ontario, Dr. DiNovo passed more LGBTQ+ bills than anyone in Canadian history. Furthermore, in her role as a reverend for Trinity St. Paul’s United Church, she performed the first legalized same-sex marriage in North America.

Dr. Mulé is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at York University, where he focuses on advocacy, social inclusion, social policy, and service provision for the LGBTQ+ community. He is also the founder and chair of Queer Ontario, a civil organization commited to questioning, challenging, and reforming the laws and institutional practices that regulate queer people.

Both of their experiences and perspectives are bound to generate a rich discussion on watershed moments in Canadian LGBTQ+ policy. Departing from issues that we now take for granted in Canada, such as same-sex marriage or the banning of conversion therapy, we aim to set the context to address more contemporary debates such as the changes to Ontario’s sex-ed curriculum.
