MPP/JD Joint Program

Combine your public policy education with law

The combined JD/MPP program levers the considerable synergies between the study of law and that of public policy.

Students in this combined program will benefit from a far richer offering of relevant courses and associated intellectual discourses than would be possible in either degree program on its own. The importance of the interrelationship between the law and public policy will doubtless grow in the coming years as public policy becomes ever more complex, and legislation, jurisprudence and legal scholarship in turn expand in their own complexity to interpret, anticipate and respond to 21st century public policy.

The combination of these degree programs will provide students with an opportunity to integrate public policy considerations into their study of the law and, in turn, add a legal perspective into their study of public policy. Additionally, students will benefit from the standards of academic excellence of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

Program Length

The combined program permits the completion of both degree programs in four years, rather than the five years that it would take to complete them independently. Applicants must apply to and be accepted into each program separately. Students must satisfy both the JD and the MPP program requirements as specified for the combined program before either degree may be conferred.

Admissions

Applicants must apply to and be accepted into each program separately. Each applicant must meet all the respective admission requirements for each degree program in both the Faculty of Law and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Students may be admitted to the Combined Program either at the time of their first application (into either program, discretely) or during the first year of their JD studies.

The combined program uses the existing procedures and services for admissions, registration, courses and advising provided by the Faculty of Law and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

Degree Requirements

Taken independently, the JD program would require completion of the first-year Law program plus 52-64 law credits in upper-year courses, while the MPP would require 8.0 FCEs over two years.

The combined program requires the completion of:
– the first-year Law program (completed in the first year of the joint/combined degree program);
– the first year MPP curriculum, with the exception of PPG1008H; and
– the following second year MPP courses: PPPG2000H, PPG2002H, PPG2003H, PPG2008H and either PPG2011H or PPG2022H, along with a total of 41-45 upper year Law credits (completed over the third and fourth years of the joint/combined degree program).
