Greater Toronto Airports Authority Crisis Communication Session

Please join us for the Crisis Communication lunchtime learn session on January 30th from 12-2 in CG-361.
The session will focus on the following:
– The importance of strong stakeholder relations before an issue or crisis strikes
– The value of working strategically with partners and government agencies
– The need to respond quickly and accurately during a crisis, particularly in the age of social media and fake news
– The requirement for a social license to operate
About the speaker:
Scott Armstrong, Director, External Communications for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority at Toronto Pearson.
Scott heads up a team of 10 at Toronto Pearson, with responsibility for Executive Communications, Digital and Social Media properties, Public Relations and Media Relations.
Working at Toronto Pearson since 2001, Scott has been involved with the redevelopment of the airport, 9/11, the northeast power failure of 2003, the crash of Air France 358 in 2005 and numerous irregular operational situations.
Scott has a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Western Ontario, a certificate in Public Relations from Humber College and a certificate in Public Relations Management from Ithaca College.
He is a member of IABC, a 2016 Gold Quill Award winner, and has served on the Airports Council International Marketing and Communications Steering Committee.
Hillary Marshall, Vice President, Stakeholder Relations & Communications, Toronto Pearson
Hillary knows what it takes to get large-scale transit, transportation and infrastructure projects moving. Over the course of her 20 year career, Hillary has led campaigns to build community, stakeholder and government engagement for projects such as the Gardiner Expressway re-development, the Port Lands master plan, and the redevelopment of the Unilever lands into a major mixed-use employment and transportation hub.
At Toronto Pearson, Hillary is leading a cross-functional team addressing the growth of air traffic in southern Ontario, and associated impacts on ground transportation connections between Toronto Pearson and regional airports. Together, the team is driving awareness of the need to address Toronto Pearson’s lack of transit connections, and advancing the concept of a multi-modal transportation hub located on airport property. Around the world other global hub airports have strengthened their airport’s role as economic catalysts by connecting multiple modes of transportation. At Toronto Pearson, that would potentially connect Regional Express Rail, High Speed Rail, Bus Rapid Transit, Light Rail Transit and more, through a single hub that serves as a gateway between downtown Toronto and the rest of the western GTA.
Hillary is responsible for all Communications, Government and Community Relations at Toronto Pearson. She was named to the role in September 2014 reporting to the President and CEO. Prior to joining Toronto Pearson, Hillary held a series of executive level Communications and Public Affairs roles in corporate Canada, global consulting firms, and in Ontario politics.
Hillary is Co-Chair of Partners in Project Green and a member of the Economic Development Committee on the Toronto Region Board of Trade.
