Policy Talks Seminar Series: Ontario’s Immigration Policy

February 3, 2016 | By |

S.96 of the Constitution gives concurrent or shared jurisdiction over immigration to provinces and the federal government. As such, provincial immigration laws must be consistent with federal laws. In this session officials from Ontario’s Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade will provide an overview of the federal and provincial roles in immigrant selection, settlement and integration.

The focus of the presentation will be on the intergovernmental dynamics and the efforts of Ontario to operationalize the concept of “shared jurisdiction” when Canada’s federal government holds the main policy levers. We’ll examine the impact of federal immigration policy changes on Ontario and our migration strategies including the federal government’s recent commitment to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. We’ll also speak to the challenges of assessing immigrant outcomes and demonstrating value for our significant investments in immigration programs.

Speakers:

Alice Young, Director, Immigration Policy
Larissa Hretchka, Manager, Policy and Intergovernmental Relations
Jamie Pitts, Manager, Information, Research and Evaluation
