Microeconomic Prep Course Overview (Summer 2021)

This summer Prof. M. Oschinski will offer a Microeconomics Prep Course for incoming MPP students. This Prep Course is intended to address students who do not have a background in economics and is designed to explain key concepts without the use of math. In addition, it will illustrate key concepts in the context of a policy application.

The overall goal is to:
• Familiarize students with the key concepts in microeconomics
• Demonstrate the use of microeconomics for policy analysis
• Prepare students for the full microeconomics lecture of the MPP program

Course Structure
The Micro Prep Course will consist of 13 video segments each with a length of 20 to 30 minutes. Each segment covers a specific topic and explains the relevant key concepts. The short segments will be available in the first week of August as asynchronous videos for students to watch when convenient for them.

In addition, there will be 4 quizzes made available through Quercus. The quizzes will consist of 10 multiple choice questions each and are intended for self-assessment only, i.e. they will not be graded. Following the shorter segments, Prof. Oschinksi will schedule 2 x 1-hour synchronous lectures on Aug. 10 and Aug. 17 from 5-6pm (EDT). During the lectures, he will build on the concepts covered in the shorter videos to discuss policy applications and examples.

While participation in the Microeconomics Prep Course is optional, we recommend active participation. It will help prepare you to thrive in the rigorous first-year courses and are especially valuable for those students without a strong economics background from their undergraduate studies.
