The Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the area of European History and Society. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in History with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The Munk School seeks scholars whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance one or more of our existing strengths, which include the Future of Democratic Societies, the Changing World Order, the Political Economy of Innovation, and the Digital World. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, externally funded research program.

The successful candidate should be able to teach and conduct research in the intellectual and social history of 20th and 21st century Europe, in both Western and Eastern Europe. We require a scholar whose work considers the historical effects of widespread conflict and social change. This position would add to our strengths in the focus areas of the future of democratic societies and the changing global order, and would further our world-leading expertise in Europe, especially as housed in the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked disciplinary and/or field-relevant academic journals or academic presses, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, through the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a teaching statement, sample course materials, teaching evaluations, and through endorsements of teaching in the letters of reference.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including in the Munk School’s professional graduate programs (the Master of Global Affairs and the Master of Public Policy) to students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and interests. The successful candidate will have experience or demonstrable interest in a professional school and/or in an interdisciplinary environment.

The Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG), within the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, invites applications for a one-year Richard M. Bird Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Municipal Finance and Governance. Research should be pertinent to IMFG’s focus on the finance and governance issues faced by large cities and city-regions in Canada and around the world.

The Fellowship commencing September 1, 2022 offers $60,000 (CAD) of financial support for the following twelve months, and provides benefits pursuant to the collective agreement between the University of Toronto and CUPE 3902, Unit 5.

Qualifications

Fellowship recipients are expected to live in Toronto, Canada, while pursuing their research, and will have the opportunity to participate generally in the intellectual life of the larger University of Toronto community.

Eligibility is limited to applicants who will have received their Ph.D. in a relevant discipline within three years prior to the time they begin their fellowship at IMFG (i.e. between September 1, 2019 and September 1, 2022). Please note that applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before the start date of the fellowship.

Responsibilities

In addition to pursuing an intensive research project, the post-doctoral fellow is expected to participate as a member of the IMFG team.

Core responsibilities include:

• Presenting their research in the form of two seminars at IMFG, with the first in the fall of 2022 and the second in the spring of 2023.
• Preparing two original research papers for publication by IMFG.

Other responsibilities, based on the fellow’s interests and IMFG’s research agenda, could include:

• Planning IMFG conferences, events or roundtables, in conjunction with IMFG staff;
• Preparing research papers for publication as part of one or more of IMFG’s three publication series;
• Developing other IMFG research projects and initiatives; and
• Providing research assistance and support to the IMFG Director.

The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.

The Centre for the Study of the United States (CSUS) in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy invites applications for a part-time (60%) teaching stream position with teaching duties in the American Studies undergraduate program. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, for one year, beginning on July 1, 2022, and ending on June 30, 2023. This appointment is renewable each year for two subsequent years, subject to operational requirements and performance.

All applicants must currently hold a Ph.D. in American Studies or in a cognate field and have an excellent record of teaching and scholarship related to American Studies.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach four one-semester courses. Responsibilities also include aiding the Director of CSUS in curricular development and implementation; administering the Graduate Student Workshops; and administration of awards and scholarship selections.

Description of Duties:

• The design and teaching of two university half-credit courses, including preparation and delivery of course content;
• Teaching two additional core half-courses in American Studies;
• Development, administration, and marking of assignments, tests, and exams, and submission of
  grades;
• Aiding the Director of CSUS in curricular development;
• Administering the CSUS Graduate Student Workshops;
• Aiding the Director of CSUS in the administration of awards and scholarship selections;
• Holding regular office hours for approximately four hours each week;
• Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned by the Program Director.
  Salary:
  $53,345.00 per annum, including benefits and occasional funding for conference travel and/or pedagogical research.

We invite applications for Fellows in Residence at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Fellows in Residence, who will be appointed either at the Senior Fellow or Distinguished Fellow levels, will spend one or two semesters at the Munk School, during which time they will be expected to engage with colleagues, participate in seminars, meet with students, and pursue their research or writing. Fellows are not expected to teach but may apply to available course teaching opportunities in our degree programs. This can be further discussed after an individual nomination is accepted by the Fellows Committee.

The intention for these fellowships is for outstanding individuals, across career stages, to develop meaningful relationships with members of the Munk School and University of Toronto community. As a result, Fellows in Residence are expected to be free from their regular professional commitments, to have a plan of the work they intend to pursue over the course of their fellowship and to spend most of their time in Toronto during their fellowship term.

Fellows in Residence should either hold a Ph.D. in a relevant academic discipline and be undertaking promising research related to core mandates of the School, and where appropriate may include Visiting Professors; or, they should have substantial experience and professional achievements related to Global Affairs and Public Policy, which they wish to develop into scholarship, engagement activities, or policy-related work over the course of their fellowship.

Fellows in residence will receive a stipend of up to $25,000 per semester, depending on their arrangements with their current employer (eg. paid leave). They will also be provided with shared office space and access to the University’s library and computing resources.

 Applications must include:

a) a letter of interest from the potential Fellow, covering what they intend to undertake during the Fellowship and the benefit of doing so within the Munk School community;

b) an up-to-date CV.

Applicants are also encouraged though not required to include a nominating letter from a Munk School faculty member or affiliate, including details of any proposed collaboration and/or the importance of the project being proposed.

 Applications will be considered at each of the three meetings of the Fellows Committee (December 15, 2021, February 15, 2022, and May 15, 2022).
