Abstract: I want to start by talking about what I’m not going to talk about. I’m not going to talk about anti-Americanism in a judgmental moralistic manner. I will be making no attempt to say that it’s good in this circumstance, bad in that circumstance, is justified in that circumstance or unjustified in that circumstance, is a good thing or a bad thing. I will be treating anti-Americanism purely as a thing, as a force, as a major factor in international affairs. Really, I’m using anti-Americanism in the sense of relations with America or of a nation or society or people pushing back against America in order to gain room to breathe.
