This white paper by Kristen Pue and Dan Breznitz examines how leading Canadian foundations have approached social innovation. While definitions vary, the paper identifies a distinctly Canadian approach to innovation based on collaboration and adaptation. In addition, the authors identify five different strategies to promote social innovation and fourteen specific tactics. After mapping out the socially innovative activities of Canadian foundations, the report advances a novel definition of social innovation, “the purposive actualization of novelty in a social setting,” to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, guide aspiring innovators and facilitate program evaluation.
