A new Citizen Lab report, entitled O Pakistan, We Stand on Guard for Thee: An Analysis of Canada-based Netsweeper’s Role in Pakistan’s Censorship Regime, has found that Canada-based Netsweeper filtering products have been installed in Pakistan, and are being used for filtering political and social web content.

Crowdfunding: Perspectives and Prospects

Researchers at the India Innovation Institute at the University of Toronto are developing a research agenda that identifies and studies elements that constitute an effective innovation system. An important factor that supports and nurtures innovations is the existence of adequate financing. Crowdfunding is a new approach to obtain necessary funding for start-ups. This approach has resulted in start-up financing of more than $1.5 billion globally in 2011.

The Post-Kyoto era has now begun, with little fanfare, some anxiety, and considerable, unaddressed challenges. While the failure to negotiate a strong Kyoto successor deserves our attention, it doesn’t change the science, global concern, or public demands for action.

Planet Blue Coat: Mapping Global Censorship and Surveillance Tools

Blue Coat Devices capable of filtering, censorship, and surveillance are being used around the world. During several weeks of scanning and validation that ended in January 2013, the Citizen Lab uncovered 61 Blue Coat ProxySG devices and 316 Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances, devices with specific functionality permitting filtering, censorship, and surveillance.
