A new Citizen Lab report, entitled O Pakistan, We Stand on Guard for Thee: An Analysis of Canada-based Netsweeper’s Role in Pakistan’s Censorship Regime, has found that Canada-based Netsweeper filtering products have been installed in Pakistan, and are being used for filtering political and social web content.

Researchers at the India Innovation Institute at the University of Toronto are developing a research agenda that identifies and studies elements that constitute an effective innovation system. An important factor that supports and nurtures innovations is the existence of adequate financing. Crowdfunding is a new approach to obtain necessary funding for start-ups. This approach has resulted in start-up financing of more than $1.5 billion globally in 2011.

On January 10-11, 2013, a distinguished group of practitioners and scholars gathered at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs in an attempt to start a new conversation about the politics and governance of climate change. The Post-Kyoto era has now begun, with little fanfare, some anxiety, and considerable, unaddressed challenges. While the failure to negotiate a strong Kyoto successor deserves our attention, it doesn’t change the science, global concern, or public demands for action.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Retail in India Opens the Doors to a US$160 billion Opportunity. In December 2012, Indian lawmakers endorsed the government’s decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Retail in the country. These reforms now allow foreign retailers in India to own 51% of operations in multi-brand outlets and 100% in single-brand outlets. What makes India an enticing retail destination for international retailers is its emerging market status, the fact that it’s the world’s second most populous economy, and its estimated corporatized retail market potential of US$162 billion by 2021.

In the past couple of years, in India and indeed the rest of the world, crowdfunding has emerged as a simple and innovative online tool that provides small businesses and start-ups with opportunities to increase their social media presence, investment base, and funding prospects.

Blue Coat Devices capable of filtering, censorship, and surveillance are being used around the world. During several weeks of scanning and validation that ended in January 2013, the Citizen Lab uncovered 61 Blue Coat ProxySG devices and 316 Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances, devices with specific functionality permitting filtering, censorship, and surveillance.
