“Merging Municipalities: Is Bigger Better?” (2013) in the IMFG Papers series, by IMFG Director Enid Slack and Prof. Richard Bird, describes the challenges of governing metropolitan regions in different parts of the world, and the range of restructuring options that are considered to address them, including two-tier models, voluntary cooperation, special purpose districts, and amalgamations.

“International Comparison of Global City Financing,” (2013) an IMFG research paper for the London Finance Commission (UK), written by IMFG Director Enid Slack, examines how major global cities including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Madrid are financed, and provides implications for the fiscal autonomy of London. The LFC was appointed by London Mayor Boris Johnson to assess how to improve the tax and public spending arrangements for the UK’s capital region.

Much of what we know about Canada’s presence in Asia is not comprehensive or easily accessible, and this gap in the public narrative concerning Canada’s footprint in Asia is to the detriment of Canadian business as well as Asian market economies.
A group of students at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs have worked to answer the question “What is Canada doing in Asia?” by going beyond the usual suspects in economic indicators.
