This chapter from professor of political science Linda A. White in the Palgrave Handbook of Gender, Sexuality, and Canadian Politics aims to help students of politics understand the importance of federalism and multilevel governance in Canada, as well as why those multilevel governance dynamics are so crucial to our understanding of politics and gender-based public policy making. White examines why federalism matters so greatly in politics and policy making in Canada, particularly in areas related to social policy making; the constitutional basis of federal-provincial relations; and the prospects for change within these institutions to create a more gender-equal society in Canada that includes both women/men, femininities/masculinities, and sexualities (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) and so on).
