Biography

Daniyal Zuberi is the RBC Chair and Professor of Social Policy, with a Joint Appointment to the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. Previously he was the William Lyon Mackenzie King Research Fellow (2011-2012) at Harvard University and a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. His research is supported by grants from several organizations including three of Canada’s four primary funding agencies, SSHRC, CFI and CIHR.

Daniyal Zuberi’s reseach has been recognized by several awards, including the Michael Harrington Award from the American Political Science Association, the Scholarly Achievement Award from the North Central Sociological Association, and an Outstanding Academic Title award from Choice Magazine. His innovative social policy research has made important contributions to the study of urban poverty, inequality, health, education, employment and social welfare. He has published scholarly monographs, journal articles and book chapters that examine the impact of public policy on vulnerable and disadvantaged populations in Canada and the United States, and that recommend reforms to reduce hardships and improve social welfare. His current research focuses on social policy and urban poverty, immigration, social welfare, education, healthcare, work & labour and reducing hospital-acquired infections. At the University of Toronto, Daniyal Zuberi is also a Faculty Associate of the R.F. Harney Ethic and Pluralism Studies Program at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and faculty advisor to the Institute for Health Improvement (IHI) Open School.
