Biography

Jayeeta Sharma is an Associate Professor in the Historical and Cultural Studies Department and a member of the Tri-campus Graduate Department of History and the Culinaria Research Centre at the University of Toronto. She is cross-appointed to the Department for the Study of Religion, and the Asian Institute. Her research examines circulation and mobility, family and gender, families and foodways across local, imperial, and postcolonial spaces. The author of Empire’s Garden: Assam and the Making of India (Duke/Permanent Black 2011), she is writing a book on global circulation in the Himalayas, and researching another on cookbook public cultures. She is on the editorial board of Global Food History, the editorial collective for Radical History Review, and edits the Empires in Perspective Routledge book series. Her founding of the Eastern Himalaya Research Network and the Project Sherpa Digital History archive, as well as her food security collaboration with Malvern Action for Neighbourhood Change comprise diverse aspects of her commitment to digital humanities as a methodology that enables community engagement, public outreach, and global knowledge transfer.
