Steve Maddox

Biography

Steve Maddox holds a MA in Russian and East European Studies and a PhD in History from the University of Toronto. For the past 12 years, Maddox worked as a professor of history at Canisius College, where he taught courses in Russian and European history. Into the role of Program and Internship Coordinator, Maddox brings years of experience working closely with students. As a faculty member at Canisius, he served in a variety of mentorship roles, advising students on career paths, senior theses, and extracurricular activities. His work in student engagement is best exemplified by a 2019 study abroad seminar that he organized and led for his students in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Maddox has published on a broad array of topics, ranging from sport in Stalin’s Gulag, to collaborationist units in the USSR during WWII, to historic preservation and Soviet memory politics. His book, Saving Stalin’s Imperial City: Historic Preservation in Leningrad, 1930-1950 (Indiana University Press, 2015) has received widespread praise and was included on the list for consideration for the 2016 Historia Nova Prize in Russian intellectual and cultural history. Maddox’s current research project, “The Soviet Sphere: Football and Global Communism,” is an examination of the role football (soccer) played in domestic politics and international public diplomacy.
