Tijs Creutzberg

Biography

I am an applied and empirically oriented political scientist specializing in public policy, public administration and strategy in the areas of research, innovation and economic development. My goal is to better understand the multilevel dynamics of economic development and their associated policy implications in an era of global economic interdependence.

Alongside my academic research on innovation, economic development and governance, I conducted numerous studies over 15 years as a consultant on a range of industry sectors and clusters for municipal, provincial and federal governments and industry groups. Examples include: An Assessment of Technology Industry Needs in Calgary (2012); A Profile of Southern Ontario’s Defence Sector (2012); An Action Plan for Innovation in Mississauga (2011); Clusterability of the Wood Product Sector in the Greater Toronto Area (2012); and Strategy to Enhance Research Capacity in New Brunswick. (2010).

I began my professional career as an engineer, working in the auto and ICT industries, before turning my attention to the policy issues associated with innovation, science and research.  After completing a BASc in Mechanical Engineering from Waterloo, I pursued a MSc in Technical Change and Industrial Strategy at the University of Manchester / Manchester Business School, followed by a PhD in Political Science at the University of Toronto.  I have been a Research Fellow with the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation and with the Mowat Centre for Innovation in Policy at the University of Toronto and have taught political economy at Carleton University. I am currently Program Director and Director of Business Development at the Council of Canadian Academies where I head up expert panels on topics of importance to provincial and federal governments.
