Dylan Clark

Biography

Dylan Clark is an instructor for Contemporary Asian Studies and the Trudeau Centre for Peace, Conflict and Justice.

Clark has worked at the University of Toronto since 2006; teaching and serving in the the departments of Anthropology, Geography, Contemporary Asian Studies.  He previously served as Assistant Professor of Anthropology (2006-2012) and Director of Contemporary Asian Studies (2012-2015).  Prior to arriving at the University of Toronto, he worked at the University of Colorado, where he was Undergraduate Advisor and lecturer in the department of Geography, and the Co-Director of Peace and Conflict Studies.

Clark’s doctoral dissertation, at the University of Washington, was an ethnographic study of anarchist youths involved in creating an autonomous society.

Currently, Clark’s research is a study of the “effective enclosure” of water in Bandung, Indonesia.  He is also working on a manuscript which considers the roles of reciprocity in culture.

His teaching is fundamentally inter-disciplinary, both in title and in content.  He teaches in many areas, including the departments of Anthropology, Geography, Contemporary Asian Studies, and Peace, Conflict and Justice; and including sub-fields of youth studies, gender studies, popular culture, linguistic anthropology, foodways, environmental issues, and urban studies.

As an activist, Clark has long been involved in movements for prison justice and climate justice, and in democratic attempts to revolutionize the economic and political systems of the USA.  He is also actively involved in trail-building in Toronto parks, and a board member of Democrats Abroad Toronto.  He is an avid cyclist.
