Derakhshan Qurban-Ali, graduating next month with a B.A. in International Relations / Peace, Conflict and Justice Studies, has been awarded the Dean’s Student Leadership award.

The award recognizes an Arts and Science student who has played a significant leadership role in his or her extracurricular activities and in so doing has had a demonstrable impact on improving the quality of student experience at the University of Toronto.

Derakhshan volunteers with the First in the Family Peer Mentor Program, providing academic, personal and social support to first generation students by facilitating weekly sessions and one-on-one meetings; is involved with U of T’s chapter of Amnesty International as well as Victoria College’s Humanities for Humanity program; and beyond campus, she’s volunteered at a refugee camp in Hungary where she taught English, organized programming and assisted the social workers in their daily routine.
