Professor Stephen Toope, former director of the Munk School of Global Affairs, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree today at McGill University’s spring convocation ceremony. Toope, who was dean of Law at McGill from 1994-97, will also give the commencement address at the event. This marks his third honorary degree; Toope has two others from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Alberta.
“The Munk School of Global Affairs would like to congratulate Professor Stephen Toope on his honorary degree from McGill University,” says Randall Hansen, interim director of the Munk School of Global Affairs. “It is richly deserved recognition of a highly distinguished career.”
Toope is an esteemed international law scholar and educator. He was the first president of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau foundation and served as president and vice-chancellor of UBC from 2006-14. He has served as chair of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances, as a member of the Commonwealth Group of Experts, Consultation on the Constitution of Sri Lanka and was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2015. Toope served as director of the Munk School of Global Affairs from January 2015 to May 2017 and will become the first non-British vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge, where he earned his PhD in 1987, this October.
