Professor Randall Hansen has been appointed as interim director of the Munk School of Global Affairs. Hansen succeeds Professor Stephen Toope, who will head to Cambridge University in the fall to assume his role as vice-chancellor. Hansen’s appointment is effective June 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.
“In its short history, the Munk School of Global Affairs has emerged as one of the world’s premier institutions for the study of global affairs. It is a great honour to have been asked to lead such a prestigious institution,” says Hansen.
Hansen has been director of the Munk School’s Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) since 2011. Under his leadership, CERES has thrived as a vital site for research and teaching on Europe, Russia and Eurasia at a time of great upheaval. Under Hansen’s leadership, CERES launched a new, endowed Hellenic Studies Initiative.
Hansen has had a remarkable career across three dimensions of research, teaching and service. His research interests include immigration and citizenship, eugenics and population policy, and the effect of war on civilian population. He is the recipient of grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Wellcome Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Jean Monnet Programme (European Commission). Hansen is highly regarded for his skills in building and maintaining relationships across and beyond the University of Toronto.
“As the world enters the most precarious period since the height of the Cold War, the School’s expertise is needed more than ever,” says Hansen. “I look forward to working with the Munk School community in building on the outstanding work undertaken by Janice Stein and Stephen Toope.”
