On September 8, stars and film buffs will flock to Hollywood North for the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Munk School of Global Affairs will once again be a part of the festivities.

For the fifth year, Munk School is partnering with TIFF for the Contemporary World Speakers series, which pairs five films from around the globe with experts from the Munk School. Audiences will have a chance to interact with filmmakers and scholars in extended discussions after each film’s screening. This year’s speakers include Stephen Toope, Ritu Birla, Teresa Kramarz, Ron Levi, and Janice Stein.

The discussion series begins September 11 and will feature the following films and Munk School experts:

Sept. 11: Zacma: Blindness  featuring Stephen Toope
Sept. 12: In Between featuring Janice Stein
Sept. 13: The Patriarch featuring Ritu Birla
Sept. 14: Past Life featuring Ron Levi
Sept. 14: The Animal’s Wife featuring Teresa Kramarz

On September 13, TIFF will screen Black Code, a documentary based on the book by Ron Deibert, director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs. Directed by documentary filmmaker Nicholas de Pencier, Black Code examines the Internet’s impact on free speech and privacy. From digital protest movements to government surveillance, there is a battle for control of cyberspace and the Internet has come to challenge ideas of citizenship, privacy and democracy. Black Code will explore the implications of cyber espionage, as well as how the web has become a weapon of the powerless among activists. Deibert will be featured in the film.
