The Munk School of Global Affairs hosted a major international conference on deterrence by denial on October 18-20, 2013. The event, Deterrence by Denial: Theory, Practice, & Empiricism, was co-organized by the Munk School and the Center for Security Studies, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Additional support for the conference was provided by the Department of National Defence’s Defence Engagement Program (DEP).
The two-day conference was organized as an authors’ workshop, in which participants discussed the evolution of deterrence theory (by denial and punishment) while applying the theory to contemporary security concerns, challenges, and threats. Participants came from a wide range of university and research institutions, including: University of Toronto, ETH Zurich, Naval Postgraduate School, RAND, University of California, University of Ottawa, US Naval War College, University of Maryland/START, Northeastern University, SAIC, Dalhousie University, IDC Herzliya, DRDC, and the Royal Military College of Canada. The conference also gave Munk School MGA students an opportunity to engage with visiting scholars. Nine MGA graduate students participated in the conference.
The results of the conference will be published in an edited volume.
