On April 18, Dani Rodrik, the Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, will present the 2019 Cadario Lecture at Isabel Bader Theatre. He will be addressing one of the most complex issues of our time in a lecture entitled: “Globalization’s Wrong Turn: What’s wrong with it, and can it be fixed?”
Rodrik has been warning of the problems associated with globalization since the mid-1990s, when he published a book called Has Globalization Gone Too Far? He argues that “hyper-globalization” has led to the rise of populism around the world. For Rodrik, the fault lies partly with those economists who became cheerleaders for a neoliberal model that didn’t consider the impacts on countries grappling with growing inequalities within their borders.
“For at least the past two decades, Dani Rodrik has been doing important work on the trade-offs inherent in an agenda of globalization,” says Carolyn Tuohy, professor emeritus and founding fellow in public policy.“Throughout, he has called attention to the continuing central role of policy-making within nation-states in wrestling with these trade-offs to reap the benefits of globalization in ways that allow for the building of inclusive and resilient societies.”
Today, Rodrik is particularly interested in developing policy ideas aimed at creating a more inclusive economy and society. He recently started the Economics for Inclusive Prosperity (EfIP) network to bring together like-minded academic economists for that purpose. Rodrik is currently the president-elect of the International Economic Association. He is also the author of The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy, Economic rules: The Rights and Wrongs of the Dismal Science, and, most recently, Straight Talk on Trade: Ideas for a Sane World Economy.
The Cadario Lecture, named for Paul Cadario, former senior manager at the World Bank and a distinguished fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, is one of the premier lectures at the University of Toronto and attracts policy leaders in the public, business, academic and non-profit communities in Canada.
“I’m delighted that Dani Rodrik joins an eminent group of public policy scholars and practitioners who’ve given the annual Cadario Lecture,” says Cadario. “They share their ideas not just with students and faculty, but also with an informed public audience, and increase the visibility of public policy at the Munk School and at the University of Toronto.”
In recent years, the Cadario Lecture has been given by Robert Putnam of Harvard (2014) on the growing inequality gap described in his book Our Kids; Atif Mian of Princeton (2015) on his book House of Debt; Pippa Norris of Harvard and Sydney (2016) on electoral integrity; and Deirdre McCloskey of the University of Illinois at Chicago on the role of ideas in economic growth (2017). Last year, the University of Toronto’s own Daniel Trefler spoke on populism and globalization.
