Serhii Plokhy, a professor at Harvard University, won the 25th Annual Lionel Gelber Prize for his book The Last Empire: The final days of the Soviet Union.
Founded in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber, the prize is a literary award for the world’s best English language non-fiction book on foreign affairs. The program seeks to deepen public debate on significant international issues. The $15,000 cash prize is awarded annually by The Lionel Gelber Foundation, in partnership with Foreign Policy magazine and the Munk School of Global Affairs.
To mark the award’s 25th anniversary, John Stackhouse, Gelber Prize jury member and distinguished fellow at the Munk School, interviewed five previous prize winners in a commemorative video. The interviews were featured in The Globe and Mail, and in Reuters.
