Next week, Canada will sign the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Marrakesh, Morocco starting Monday, December 10th 2019.

The non-binding document is the result of two years of international negotiation. It sets 23 distinct objectives for safer, more orderly international migration. In recent weeks, the compact has become a source of divisive political debate in Canada and abroad, much of which turns on misrepresentations of its legal status and impacts on sovereignty.

The Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto will host a video press call with Canada’s leading experts on international migration. These experts will directly address some of the rhetoric around the law, politics, and process involved in the Compact and elaborate on why supporting the Compact on safe, orderly and regular migration is in Canada’s sovereign interest.

Our expert video participants include:

Audrey Macklin – Director, Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies, Chair in Human Rights Law, and Professor of Law, University of Toronto

François Crepeau – Director, McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, Professor in Public International Law, McGill University, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants (2011-2017)

Craig Damian Smith – Associate Director, Global Migration Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto

Nathan Benson
– Legal & Research Director, The Refugee Hub, University of Ottawa
