Dr. Mark Winward is a Sessional Lecturer at both the Trudeau Centre and the Department of Political Science, and teaches PCJ260Y, the introductory peace, conflict and justice course of the PCJ program.

Q: What is your PCJ course, PCJ260Y, about?

A: As the introductory course, PCJ260Y explores key concepts surrounding peace, conflict, and justice; reasons for conflict across various levels of analysis; and how we can promote peace. The course is divided into six units, each of which concludes with a major case study.

Q: What are your research interests?
A: research variations in the form and frequency of mass violence. I am especially interested in differences in the frequency of violence across time and space, and why/when security forces opt for killing rather than incarceration. I study these variations especially in the context of Southeast Asia.

Q: Do you have any tips or words of advice for PCJ students?
A: Two tips: Lots of people here are willing to help you, so if you need help, ask! And, find something completely outside the program that brings you joy – there’s lots to explore in the city!

Q: What is something all your students should know about you?
A: I always know if you haven’t done the readings!
