Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s case competition!

Students were given 24 hours to try and innovate for a solution to an aspect of homelessness in Toronto. As apart of the competition, each group had access to one of the following professional mentors: Director of Policy at the Wellesley Institute Steve Barnes, Rector of St Stephen-in-the-Fields Anglican church Maggie Helwig, Director of Programs, Grants and Capacity Building at United Way Toronto and York Region Janice Chu, Manager of Strategic Policy and Service Planning at the City of Toronto Laural Raine, and experienced academic with over 20 years of field research Dr. Suzanne Zerger.

The teams pitched their solutions to the following panel of judges: MPP of Parkdale-High Park Cheri DiNovo, John Howard Society’s Amber Kellen, and Director of Human Resources for the Trek for Teens Foundation Nicole Bazzocchi.

The judges saw ideas that ranged from innovating to bridge the gap between incarceration and recidivism to supplementing employment opportunities through communal work. In the end, they chose the group that pitched a project called “Pot of Gold,” aimed at helping homeless LGBQT+ Youth.
