Summer Opportunities
Students who successfully complete the Munk One Program have the opportunity to travel abroad with Beyond the Classroom, our summer study program. Financial assistance and U of T course credit is available for most Beyond the Classroom programs. These international summer opportunities build on the material learned during the academic year in the Munk One program and give students the chance to further enhance and practice their skills. Past programs have included:
BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND: Munk One students in the Global Health Lab identified the potential utility of a mobile app to diagnose PTSD in the Zaatari refugee camp, home to thousands of families fleeing the Syrian civil war. This team of students received funding to work over the summer in Northern Ireland with various NGOs on the app’s development and pilot trial in the field.
JERUSALEM, ISRAEL: Munk One students have participated in several summer opportunities in Israel across a wide range of subject matter areas at Hebrew University. These experiences include InnovNation, a month-long intensive program offering students unmatched insight into disruptive technologies and direct access to top Israeli tech entrepreneurs. The Coexistence in the Middle East Study Abroad summer program has also seen Munk One students gaining deeper insight into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through exploring contrasting narratives from Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Students have also enrolled in a two-week program about the state of Transboundary Water Cooperation in the region.
PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA: In Argentina, students explore the gap between “thinking globally and acting locally” by studying the implementation of international environmental policy in a developing country. Working in Buenos Aires and Patagonia, students analyze government, private actors and civil society decisions to conserve the environment or exploit it.
MUNK ONE CASE COMPETITION
The Munk One Case Competition is an annual event organized by the second year alumni class as a legacy gift for the current Munk One cohort. Students are given 24 hours to design a solution to a secret problem with the help of guest speakers and mentors. They are tasked with pitching and defending their initiatives to a panel of esteemed judges as practice for the MUN105Y1 Dragon’s Den pitches.
Past topics have included the opioid crisis in Toronto, rural migrant workers’ rights in Ontario, and the settlement and integration of Syrian refugees.
MunkSI (Munk Social Incubator)
Due to COVID-19, MunkSI will not be offered in 2021-2022.
Passionate about problem solving? Want to develop a social venture but not sure how to start? The MSI is open to undergraduate students in Munk School programs with additional spots for students from other faculties/areas of study.
SOCIAL INCUBATION:
Social ventures are an increasingly common business model. However, there are still there are limited offerings to support would-be social entrepreneurs in developing ventures, particularly at their early stages. MunkSI aims to fill this gap by taking Munk School students who are passionate about addressing a social issue and supporting their development of a venture to remedy that issue. We help Munk students design impactful solutions to social problems.
Through weekly sessions and workshops, mentorship and collaboration, you will learn the skills such as market research, finding partners, etc. to create an innovative social venture.
