2018 The Changing Face of Intervention

2018 The Changing Face of Intervention

Welcome to “The Changing Face of Intervention”, the Munk School of Global Affairs’ Twelfth Annual Graduate Student Conference. This year’s conference is focused on the evolving nature of multiple forms of intervention – humanitarian, fiscal, military – in an increasingly interconnected world.

We are bringing together engaged students and leading scholars who will explore some of the unexpected negative and positive impacts of intervention and interventionism in the Global South. We will also examine the prospective effects of developments in technology and globalization on intervention in the future.

Our student panelists include Alina Bykova and Farah Rasmi from the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies; and Anowa Quarcoo and Chris Tomalty-Moeller from the Master of Global Affairs Program.

We are also excited to welcome our invited panelists:

  • Catherine Bragg, former Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the United Nations;
  • Kirsten Johnson, Department of Family Medicine, McGill University;
  • Jon R. Lindsay, Director of the Trudeau Centre for Peace, Conflict and Justice at the Munk School of Global Affairs;
  • Professor David Michalski, formerly of Médecins Sans Frontières and currently of the Munk School of Global Affairs;
  • Valerie Percival, of the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University; and
  • Qiang Zha, Graduate Program Director at the Faculty of Education of York University.

The conference will conclude with a Grand Panel featuring all six guest speakers who will share their thoughts on the future of international intervention and provide insight from their respective fields.

We hope that by the day’s end you will come away with a clearer understanding of the current state of global intervention, developments within the field, and its future direction. Thank you to all of our speakers and delegates for attending and learning with us, and we look forward to seeing you at the networking reception this evening.

Warmest regards, The Munk Graduate Student Conference Team
