CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF KOREA GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

The Centre for the Study of Korea, housed in the Asian Institute at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, is pleased to announce three new opportunities for funding support for graduate students working on research projects in Korean Studies.

Interested graduate students must submit an application with support from their supervisor by January 15, 2018. The selection process is competitive. Preference will be given to students without any other access to funding and who have not yet presented at a research conference. See details on application procedures for awards below.

CSK CONFERENCE TRAVEL AWARD

DESCRIPTION

This grant assists graduate students with conference-related expenses, and enables them to present papers related to Korean studies at major academic conferences. The maximum award is $500 and we expect to give two awards in the 2017-18 academic year. Applicants must be actively enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Toronto and the application form requires a signature of support from the applicant’s supervisor. Awards may be used for conference registration fees, transportation costs to and from the conference, and lodging during the conference.

NOTE

If awarded for past travel (but not before September 1, 2017), a copy of the conference program and all original invoices must be submitted within 1 week of notice of award. If awarded for future travel, all material must be submitted within 3 weeks of return from the conference. The funds will be paid as reimbursement of expenses.

CSK RESEARCH TRAVEL AWARD

DESCRIPTION

This award supports graduate students conducting PhD thesis projects related to Korean studies and is geared towards covering airfare to and from South Korea. The maximum award is $2,000 and we expect to give two awards in the 2017-18 academic year.

CRITERIA

Applicants must be registered and enrolled full time in a doctorate program at the University of Toronto. Applicants must be engaged in research focusing on Korea.  Other projects that figure Korea prominently in the research agenda may be considered. Preference will be given to applicants wishing to conduct field research in North America or South Korea and who have not received funding support from other sources.

NOTE

Candidates must secure approval prior to travel. All awardees must submit detailed receipts, invoices, original boarding passes and a report summarizing their activities and expenses within 4 weeks of their return (or completion of their proposed research). The funds will be paid as a reimbursement of expenses.

PUBLICATION SUPPORT AWARD

DESCRIPTION

This award provides financial support to support editing costs for graduate students in the completion of a published journal article or book chapter related to the study of Korea. The maximum award is $300 and we expect to give two awards in the 2017-18 academic year.

CRITERIA

Applicants must be registered and enrolled full time in a masters or doctorate program at the University of Toronto. Applicants must be engaged in research focusing on Korea. Preference will be given for copy editing necessary for final submission of an article or book chapter for publication at any stage of the process, including first submission, revise and resubmit stage, or minor revisions necessary after acceptance.
