Professor Paola Salardi has been selected as the recipient of the 2021-22 University of Toronto Teaching Fellowship. The fellowship is one of only two awarded each year across the University and provides faculty members in the Teaching Stream with an opportunity and resources to engage in a two-year pedagogical project that furthers education in areas related to sustainability, economics or global justice.

Salardi’s Fellowship project will focus on designing an introductory course to data analysis for students in the Munk School’s Peace, Conflict and Justice (PCJ) program. The aim of Salardi’s proposed course is to introduce quantitative methods and research to non-specialists in a way that’s engaging and accessible. “Done well, this new course can be transformative, opening new horizons and possibilities for our students,” says Salardi, who is director of the Trudeau Centre for Peace, Conflict and Justice. “It would provide an offering that is truly unique relative to what is available elsewhere”.

“We are thrilled that Professor Salardi’s educational leadership is being recognized by the University,” says Cheryl Misak, interim director of the Munk School. “The pedagogical research that she is embarking on, and the broader learning that will result from it, speaks directly to the Munk School’s aspirations in building new and innovative approaches to undergraduate teaching.”

Salardi is an assistant professor who teaches at the Munk School and in the Department of Economics. Among other areas, her research has focused on the short- and long-term consequences of conflict on welfare, the changing role of women in post-conflict countries and on inequality and women’s empowerment. Alongside her academic work, Salardi previously worked at the Inter-American Development Bank and as a consultant with UN WOMEN.

“Professor Salardi is an exceptionally talented colleague, a remarkable educator and scholar. Her track record in offer provides students with unique learning opportunities,” says Ron Levi, the Munk School’s associate director, academic. “Her proposed course is important and [will] have significant impact.”
