Study at the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies

Recognized as one of the best of its kind, the Master of Arts in European and Russian Affairs program at the Munk School’s Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) offers students the opportunity to pursue a comprehensive, rigorous and hands-on degree. Drawing upon the expertise of the country’s largest group of faculty experts on the region from across more than ten U of T departments, students are supported as they build individual projects and initiatives; undertake internships and exchanges in their region of interest; pursue joint degree in law, Jewish Studies or Ethnic and Pluralism Studies, and access an unparalleled series of seminars and conferences and one of the best library collections on the region in North America.

Admissions

Admission Requirements*

Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

Competitive applicants should have an academic average of B+ or better in their most recent year of undergraduate work and should have completed several undergraduate courses in the European/Russian/Eurasian area

Competitive applications should have a minimum of one year of study in a relevant language. If necessary, applicants are urged to undertake additional language training in the summer preceding entry to the program.

Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree outside of Canada (international applicants)

If you are an international applicant, review the Admission Requirements section of the Admissions Guide. The Equivalent Qualifications Chart located will help you determine if your international degree is considered equivalent.

Proficiency in English

As English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Toronto, applicants must demonstrate an adequate level of proficiency in English, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. CERES follows the School of Graduate Studies’ (SGS) standard policy on language proficiency in English. To determine whether it is necessary to submit results from a language examination, please consult the SGS website.

Internships & Exchanges

Students candidates are required to spend a minimum of ten weeks in their region of study by undertaking an internship, an academic exchange, or both. Students typically spend a summer or a semester abroad engaged in research, study, and training. Funding as well as advisory and logistical support from CERES for are guaranteed for all accepted applicants.

Joint Programs

The MA in European and Russian Affairs can be combined with the Faculty of Law’s JD Program (MA ERA/JD), the Collaborative Program in Jewish Studies or the Collaborative Graduate Program in Ethnic and Pluralism Studies.

Fees & Financial Aid

All applications to the MA program received before February 1, 2021 are automatically considered for financial aid, although funding is not guaranteed with admission. Guaranteed funding is provided only in connection with fulfillment of the degree’s internship or exchange requirement.

Financial Aid

CERES students have a wide range of financial assistance opportunities, both from the School of Graduate Studies and the Centre. CERES provides funding for the study of:

– Russia and the former Soviet Union states

– Central, Southeastern Europe

– Eurasia

All applications to the MA program received before February 1, 2021 are automatically considered for financial aid, although funding is not guaranteed with admission. This competition is based on academic merit and includes visa students.
