Lynne Viola receives SSHRC Gold Medal for her work on Stalinist Russia

The Munk School congratulates Lynne Viola on her receipt of a SSHRC Gold Medal. Professor Viola is among the world’s foremost historians of 20th century Russia, and her work on violence, gender, rurality, and political culture under Stalin has redefined these fields.
The SSHRC Gold Medal follows a long list of highly distinguished awards: a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Killam Prize, and a Molson Prize. For fifteen years, Professor Viola has been an active member of the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES), teaching oversubscribed courses on Stalin and Stalinism, supervising graduate students, and directing research projects on 20th century Russian history. She is, quite simply, CERES and the Munk School at their best. Congratulations Lynne: well done and well deserved!
