Petro Jacyk Non-Resident Scholars Program

The Petro Jacyk Non-Resident Scholars Program will bring together Ukrainian scholars, public officials, advanced PhD students and public intellectuals to participate in regular virtual seminars moderated by a member of the University of Toronto faculty on a common theme related to the war and the rebuilding of Ukraine. Under “Ukrainian” we understand individuals who lived/worked in Ukraine and/or had a primary affiliation with a Ukrainian institution at the time the war started. The goal of the seminar will be for scholars, intellectuals, advanced PhD students and/or practitioners to complete and present on a scholarly/artistic/or public policy related project. Virtual engagements will run September-December 2022 and January-April 2023.  Preference will be given to applicants who intend to or currently remain in Ukraine.

Successful applicants will receive an honorarium of $3,000 CAD for their participation in the seminar as well as virtual access to the University of Toronto Libraries.

Application process:  Please send a CV and one-page cover letter outlining the proposed project to jacyk.program@utoronto.ca. Please indicate in your cover letter your current location (do not specify the city if you prefer not to do so) and preferred dates for participation.

Deadline: June 30

THE PETRO JACYK PROGRAM is pleased to announce the call for applications for its 2022-2023 Visiting Scholars Program – CALL CLOSED

Scholars studying Ukraine outside Ontario are invited to apply for funding available through the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine at the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES), the University of Toronto for the 2022-2023 academic year. Successful applicants will conduct research and interact with Canadian scholars during their stay at CERES. They will also be invited to give a presentation on the topic of their research and are expected to take part in relevant scholarly events. As a rule, engagements will be scheduled during the fall and winter sessions of the university, that is between September and April.

Each year the Petro Jacyk Program—in partnership with the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC)—may support one scholar whose research relates to Holodomor. Successful applicants will benefit from interaction with not only scholars in the University of Toronto community but also those who are involved in HREC projects. They will have access to the archives of the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre, where HREC is located (a ten-minute walk from CERES), archives that include unpublished eyewitness accounts of the Holodomor, as well as the extensive Holodomor microfilm collection from the Central State Archive of Popular Organizations (Kyiv) at the University of Toronto Library. HREC is a project of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (University of Alberta).

Please note that if there are travel restrictions in place due to COVID-19 pandemic, successful applicants may be engaged virtually: they will be provided with full access to the University of Toronto’s rich library resources and will interact with PJP’s and CERES’s communities virtually.

Eligibility:

We invite applications from scholars at all stages of their careers working in the social sciences and humanities, including recent PhD or kandydat nauk degree recipients. Advanced doctoral students may also be considered.

We especially welcome applicants whose work relates to its thematic focus “Challenges of Independent Ukraine.” This focus includes state- and institution-building in Ukraine; law and governance; problems of democratization; education, culture and identity of the nation and ethnic groups in Ukraine; history and the imperial past; and foreign policy and international relations.

Solid knowledge of English is essential for successful participation in the program.

Invitations to successful applicants for an in-person visit to the University of Toronto are conditional upon applicants’ ability to fulfill the requirements for entering Canada as set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Funding:

The following cost will be covered by the Petro Jacyk Program:

In-person visits: (1) lowest round-trip economy airfare to the maximum of CAD $1,200; (2) visa costs (if applicable); (3) COVID-19 tests (if mandatory for travel); 4) medical insurance for the approved stay at the University of Toronto; (5) up to $20 per day for accommodation for up to 56 days upon submission of appropriate receipts; (6) allowance calculated at a rate of CAD $60/full day up to the maximum of CAD$3,360 for 56 full days at CERES . The minimum length of stay will be 28 days. Successful applicants who are advanced doctoral students will spend one term at CERES.

Virtual engagements: scholars who are engaged virtually will be given a CAD $1,500 honorarium. The duration of the engagement will be 3 months.

Completed applications will consist of:

  • A filled in application form
  • a two-page description of the research proposal (double-spaced);
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • two confidential letters of reference.

Applications should be sent electronically to jacyk.program@utoronto.ca. The two referees should email their letters directly to the same email address.

You may identify a CERES faculty member who, in your opinion, could provide guidance for you during your tenure at the University of Toronto (you do not need to contact this faculty member directly). Otherwise, a faculty member will be assigned by the selection committee.

All application materials, including the letters of reference, must be in English.  Letters of reference which are not in English must be translated by a qualified translator or agency, and submitted together with the original letter by the referee.

Deadline: all documents should be received by March 15, 2022.
