This blog post presents eight media tools to help educators create networked classrooms that foster new forms of student engagement and learning. Networked classrooms enable students to experiment with networking and begin to build their networks which will are proving to be ever more essential in today’s society. The eight tools include:
- Pinterest: a highly visual social media platform that enables students to share ideas easily
- Learni.st: a curated platform offering a vast array of educational resources
- Facebook: a popular social media platform that offers tools (e.g. create pages) that educators can use to share information and resources with students
- Edmodo: provides access to a social network dedicated to educators and students, allowing them to connect with others as well as resources
- Twitter: offers tools to engage with others in conversations, find people and resources, and share ideas
- Diigo: a tool that can be used to teach students how to conduct research while also enabling students to learn from each other
- Skype or Facetime: enables teachers to conduct real-time video sessions with others across the globe
- Commenting or Blogging: such activities can help foster critical thinking as well as reading and writing skills among students
