Description

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities that comprise diverse residential, commercial and industrial activities. Increasing concern about climate change and energy security are driving the development of clean, efficient and sustainable energy solutions. Cities will shape the future of the energy sector and they have the opportunity to be effective engines for change. Meeting this challenge will require innovative approaches to urban planning, development and infrastructure, and collaboration between government, business, and academia.

Speaker: David Miller
Former Mayor of Toronto and Urban Sustainability Advocate
During his tenure as Mayor of Toronto from 2003-2010, David Miller championed a variety of sustainability policies that attracted international recognition including public transit and bike lane expansion, zero-interest loans for local renewable energy projects and a fuel-efficiency transition plan for the city’s vehicle fleet. As Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group from 2008-2010, he led an international network of major cities committed to combating climate change through municipal efforts. Today, Mr. Miller works on international business and sustainability issues as a lawyer for the Toronto firm Aird and Berlis LLP. He also advises the World Bank on urban issues, sits on the board of the David Suzuki Foundation and is a Future Cities Global Fellow at Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
