The undergraduate program in American Studies is seeking one Teaching Assistant for the following course:

AMS300H1S: Theories and Methods in American Studies

Wednesdays, 1:00pm – 3:00pm (Tutorials: 3:00pm – 4:00pm / 4:00pm – 5:00pm)

This course explores a range of the many ‘theories and methods’ that have animated the interdisciplinary field of American Studies. Students will read and discuss texts that exemplify or explain a wide variety of theoretical orientations and their associated research methods, exploring how scholars use different approaches to illuminate different kinds of questions about American experience(s). By analyzing the methods, history and theories of American Studies, we’ll trace the invention of the field. Students will have four methods exercises where they will try their hand at close reading, ethnographic interviews, visual methods, and historical analysis. This course is required for majors, but is open to all who have met the prerequisites.

Qualifications
Teaching experience in leading tutorials, preferably in American-focused courses, as well as an Americanist research focus are preferred. First consideration will be given to full-time graduate students at the University of Toronto.

Relevant Criterion

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Duties (identify if duties are to be other than in-person)

  • Designing tutorials in consultation with the instructor
  • Teaching tutorials
  • Marking/grading student papers and assignments
  • Holding office hours for academic counselling of students

Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.

Hours of work: approx. 100 hours in total

Estimated Course Enrolment: The estimated course enrollment is a maximum of 40 students

Rate of Pay: $47.64 per hour (+ vacation pay)
