Kakehashi

Kakehashi project

THE CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF GLOBAL JAPAN IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR PARTICIPATION IN THE 2019-20 KAKEHASHI PROJECT

Generously supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and administered by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the Kakehashi Project is an exchange program promoting understanding of Japan in North America. The Japanese word “kakehashi” means “bridge,” symbolizing the hope that participants will form lasting relationships with Japan and its people and serve as bridges between nations and cultures.

The 2019-20 Kakehashi Project is an opportunity for a group of University of Toronto senior undergraduate and graduate students (including two group leaders nominated by the Centre for the Study of Global Japan)  to travel to Japan for the nine-day program. Selected students will demonstrate an interest in Japanese politics, diplomacy, technology, and culture.

The 2019-20 Kakehashi Project will take place during the February reading week, 2020.

Kakehashi Project participants will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Attend lectures on Japanese economy, politics, society, history, culture and diplomatic relations
  • Participate in academic exchange programs
  • Visit educational sites and institutions, high-tech and traditional industries, world heritage sites, provincial government offices
  • Join in cross-cultural events and discussions with local people
  • Participate in hands-on-learning experiences such as home-stays and workshops
  • Share information about Japan through reporting sessions and social media during/after the program

The Program covers round trip economy airfare, accommodation, transportation, meals during the program in Japan, admission fees related to scheduled activities, and most overseas travel insurance. Personal expenses, such as passport fees, vaccinations, etc., local travel to Pearson Airport, excess baggage fees, and purchase of souvenirs are the responsibility of the individual participant.
