During the summer of 2017, CERES MA student Eilish Hart interned for Hromadske.TV, a digital media NGO based in Kyiv, Ukraine. She worked with a team of editors, producers and journalists to create and adapt content for their English-language service, Hromadske International. In addition to writing and translating articles, she assisted with editing and producing content for social media. Eilish also worked with video editors and sound engineers to help prepare segments for the Sunday Show, Hromadske’s weekly prime-time broadcast covering political developments in Eastern Europe.

Interning at Hromadske allowed Eilish to develop a variety of new skills while deepening her knowledge of Ukraine and Eastern Europe as a region. She worked on a variety of projects on key topics in the region, such as human rights, media freedom, war, migration, political reform and international relations.

Eilish took advantage of the opportunity to build on her academic background and adapt those skills to journalism through fact-checking and content-writing for a non-specialist audience. She also became familiar with new online platforms for producing and sharing digital media. Living and working in Kyiv, Eilish was also very happy to have daily opportunities to practice her Russian and to pick up some Ukrainian along the way.
