For recent graduate Hui Wen Zheng, extracurriculars at the Asian Institute like the Richard Charles Lee Insights Through Asia Challenge (ITAC) were some of her “most prized experiences to date.” It’s a sentiment Deep Leekha, another ITAC alum, echoes, noting that these opportunities meant “studying at the Asian Institute was one the best decisions of my life.”

Along with the Big Ideas Competition: Exploring Global Taiwan, ITAC is one of the beloved funded student research opportunities returning to the Asian Institute in 2022. Applications to both programs are now open to all U of T students until February 18.

Understanding that developing fluency across cultural, business, social, and political spheres is essential to students’ future pursuits, opportunities like ITAC and Exploring Global Taiwan are crucial complements to classroom learning. These academically rooted, life-changing research experiences provide students with training in all aspects of conducting research and mobilizing their findings.

The Asian Institute has continued to adapt the programs as the pandemic evolves. This year, in addition to the suite of training modules, one-on-one support from faculty and staff, and the opportunity to make life-long friends; winning students will work closely with a professor on a major research project. Topics range from Professor Yiching Wu’s project, building an alternative archive of China’s Maoist past; to Professor Aditi Mehta’s research on local library branches and neighbourhood media centres in immigrant communities; to Professor Sida Liu’s examination of political participation by professional groups in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
