The Munk School Teams Up with TIFF

In 2017, the Munk School of Global Affairs and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) partnered for a sixth year to present the TIFF Speaker Series. The series pairs Munk School experts with diverse critics and filmmakers for illuminating post-screening discussions of the places and issues portrayed in films from around the world. This year, several Munk School faculty members – including professors Aisha Ahmad, Robert Austin, Teresa Kramarz and Joseph Wong, and Munk School founding director Janice Stein – engaged in wide-ranging conversations about documentaries and fiction films from Iraq, France, Israel, Liberia and elsewhere.

Front-Page News from the Citizen Lab

In 2017, research from the Munk School’s Citizen Lab – an interdisciplinary lab working at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security – garnered global media coverage, including four front-page stories in The New York Times. The Times reported extensively on a worrisome phenomenon Citizen Lab researchers had noted: governments ostensibly adopting spyware technologies for security and crime-fighting purposes – but subsequently using the tools to monitor activism and political dissent.
