Biography

I am an Assistant Professor of Sociology at University of Toronto – St. George, and the 2020-21 Bissell-Heyd Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of the United States of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. I received my Ph.D. in 2018 from the University of California, Los Angeles. My research interests are international migration, race/ethnicity, religion, and nationalism. The question guiding all my research pursuits is how transnational, global forms of inequality intersect with local forms of boundary-work to affect immigrant groups, particularly those coming from Muslim-majority countries to the West. My work has received several grants and awards, including funding from the National Science Foundation and an Honorable Mention for Best Article from the Global and Transnational Sociology section of the American Sociological Association. I have also published a book – Here, There, and Elsewhere: The Making of Immigrant Identities in a Globalized World (Stanford University Press 2020) – and several sole-authored articles in top-tier journals.
