The Asian Institute and the Dr. David Chu Program in Asia Pacific Studies are honoured to award scholarships this year totaling $135,000 to students studying the Asia Pacific region.

Indonesia field school pilot project

August 18, 2008

In May, Professor Joshua Barker accompanied 14 graduate and undergraduate students to Indonesia for an inaugural field course about planning and development in an Asian megacity. The pilot was a great success and will likely be repeated in the future.

Asia Pacific Reader received over 180,000 hits

An e-journal led by Asian Institute’s students, Asia Pacific Reader, officially received over 180,000 hits since its launch less than two year ago on October, 2006. Hits came from more than 60 countries, from every continent except perhaps Antarctica.

Asian Pacific Reader and East Asia Forum collaboration

The Asia Pacific Reader is thrilled to announce a joint effort with the East Asia Forum, a long standing academic journal published by the East Asian Studies Graduate Student Union. The combined efforts will produce an annual journal on East Asia.

Classic kung fu film screening with live appearance by Gordon Liu

July 16, 2008

One of Hong Kong’s most famous action stars, Gordon Liu has appeared in at least 47 films from 1974 to 1994, including Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. Asian Institute cosponsors free screening of “Heroes of the East” on July 19 at Innis Town Hall.

New garden dedicated to Vivienne Poy

Chancellor Emerita Vivienne Poy was recognized June 23 for her years of service to the University of Toronto with a garden dedicated in her name, along with a plaque at the chancellor’s entrance to Convocation Hall.

Newly established Dr. David Chu Leadership Award in Asia Pacific Studies

The Asian Institute will make up to 3 awards each year to students who demonstrate strong leadership abilities and show academic achievement in pursuing study or research related to the Asia Pacific region.

Burma Cyclone Relief Benefit screening of ‘Mystic Ball’
