Professor Tong Lam, historian of modern China and a core faculty member at the Asian Institute, University of Toronto, is having his solo photo exhibit at the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley, from September 16 to November 6, 2013.

The exhibit, entitled “Unreal Estate,” features 21 of Professor Lam’s recent photographs that capture the unimaginable, surreal, and yet actual scenes of China’s profound transformation and its impacts on the urban landscape and people.

In conjunction with the exhibit, a panel discussion examining his work and the work by filmmaker Yang Fudong will be held on September 23.  Professor Lam will also give an artist talk, followed by a signing for his new photo essay book Abandoned Futures, on October 23. Learn more about these events at the Institute of East Asian Studies website.

For those unable to attend the exhibit and events in California, Tong Lam’s photography can be found on his website.
