The Asian Institute is seeking bright and motivated students to fill its summer internship positions. A hub of cutting-edge research and teaching on the contemporary Asia region, the AI brings together leading scholars and students to push the boundaries of intellectual inquiry through conferences, seminars, and innovative multidisciplinary initiatives. Interns will gain valuable experience and extensive coaching, and learning opportunities in this dynamic environment.

The internships are a minimum of two months in length, with flexible start and end dates between May and August 2012. The weekly schedule (comprising at least 14 hours per week) will be determined with the AI. While the internships are unpaid, an honorarium of $250 will be awarded upon completion of the assignment.

Graduate and undergraduate students from all U of T campuses are eligible to apply. POSITIONS

Business and Project Management Intern. Responsibilities include shadowing the Associate Director and supporting the AI’s business portfolios, as well as initiating projects to help enhance the AI by identifying business solutions and opportunities. The intern will work in collaboration with stakeholders, faculty, staff, and students to establish project requirements, resources, and objectives. This intern will also manage the AI’s internship program by writing job descriptions, tracking intern activities, and monitoring workflow, responsibilities and timesheets. Must be resourceful and highly organized with excellent time management skills.

Communications and Events Intern. Responsibilities include identifying communications and promotional opportunities, and helping to develop/execute an appropriate communications strategy. The intern will write and edit promotional pieces such as media releases, website news articles, brochures, and posters. This intern will also help in finalizing details for Asian Heritage Month and other special events, and work closely with the Event Coordinator to further develop the AI’s database of contacts. Must have strong writing and editing skills with an ability to think strategically about business communications.

Film Festival Intern. Responsibilities include taking part in the organization of two joint film events, the first in June in partnership with TIFF and the second in the fall in collaboration with CINSSU. This intern will work with the film programmers to secure the films from the distributors, negotiate the best screening fees, handle film traffic, and so on. The intern will also assist the Event Coordinator on event logistics and promotion. Must be knowledgeable and passionate about film and creative event planning.

Grant Writing and Research Intern. Responsibilities include seeking financial support for AI initiatives by collaborating with AI directors to identify opportunities and develop effective proposals. The intern will be tasked with understanding each project objective by conducting background research, finding potential funding sources, and drafting grant applications. Must be a strong writer and researcher with powerful persuasive abilities.

Social Media and Web Intern. Responsibilities include identifying, planning, launching, and maintaining social media initiatives such as facebook pages and twitter feeds, and evaluating their effectiveness. The intern will research potential social media platforms for promotional and outreach applications. This intern will also evaluate and contribute to the usability and content of AI websites. Must be an active social media user with the ability to translate that passion into an effective marketing strategy.
