On October 14-15, the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies hosted the biennial conference of the CCSEAS. More than 120 people attended for a full two days of panels. Scholars from Asia, Europe and the US also joined Canadian scholars for lively discussion. Topics ranged from agrarian relations, religion and politics, urban imaginings, migration, and more. Professor Vedi Hadiz, from Murdoch University delivered a fascinating keynote lecture on “Bringing the Middle East to the Study of Southeast Asian Islamic Politics.” A pre-conference event, entitled “Cultures in the Diaspora: Filipino Arts and Academic Showcase”, featured a panel of academics and local artists who discussed and showcased the dynamism of Toronto’s Filipino community.
