The Asian Institute is proud to congratulate Nabila Qureshi on winning the Walter and Mary Tuohy Award in Arts and Science. Nabila will spend a month in Delhi, India, volunteering for a women’s empowerment program, where she will talk to marginalized women about their goals, the challenges they face in life, and to what degree they feel politically empowered to bring about change – especially after a recent bill was passed reserving one-third of seats in Indian parliament for women. She will also teach English, health and sanitation education, and engage them in the arts, helping to provide skills which they can use to support themselves and their families. Nabila plans to use this experience as a case study on development issues in India as part of her fourth year Political Science thesis, which will compare and contrast governance and development in India and China.
