Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission into the Collaborative Master’s Specialization in Contemporary East and Southeast Asian Studies (CESEAS) applicants are expected to have completed course work on Asia or have had relevant working or living experience in Asia.

Applicants who wish to enroll into the collaborative specialization are encouraged to apply through the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Online Application. Since this is a collaborative specialization, applicants need to apply into a home department first.

Please consult individual websites for program requirements as well as application procedures and deadlines.

The CESEAS internal deadline for applications for September 2019 admittance is February 1, 2019. Please note that some home departments have earlier application deadlines. It is up to the applicant to ensure that both program deadlines are met.

*If you are applying through the School of Graduate Studies online application: Applicants wishing to be admitted to the collaborative program must apply to a home department through the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Online Application. In the Collaborative Programs section of the application, please select that you are also applying to the Master’s Specialization in Contemporary East and Southeast Asian Studies (formerly Asia-Pacific Studies). Your file will be reviewed by us. Please note: if you missed applying into our collaborative specialization through SGS’s online system and are interested in our program, please speak to your home department’s program coordinator about your interest in our program, upon consent, they will release your files to us for review.

If you are applying through the Rotman School of Management: please e-mail us a supplementary application package including a photocopy of the application submitted to the home department, a curriculum vitae, a statement of interest, transcripts (sealed and signed), and at least two letters of reference (also sealed and signed) with specific information regarding your background in East or Southeast Asian studies and relevant experiences in the region. Your letters of reference are required to be sent by your referees themselves to ai.asianstudies@utoronto.ca

What we look for in your application:

A letter of intent. If you are applying into a home department and have written a letter of intent that has research, relevant working or living conditions in Asia, you may use the same letter of intent for the collaborative program. If the letter of intent to your home department does not have an Asian component, please submit a separate letter to ai.asianstudies@utoronto.ca.
Course work in Asia

In most cases, applicants are not required to send a supplementary application to our office, except for those who are not applying through the SGS online application and for Rotman Management applicants.

Entrance Awards

Applicants are automatically considered for a Dr. David Chu Entrance Award. These awards of up to $5,000 are offered to applicants based on academic merit and financial need, and are paid out in September of the year that recipients are enrolled in ASI1000Y. We have generous funding available for Ontario residents and limited funding for other students. All applicants are considered for this award upon admission, and are asked to fill out the OSOTF Financial Needs Assessment Form to help us determine the value of the award.
