We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Cheryl Misak as the Interim Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy effective December 15, 2020.

Professor Misak assumes the role from Michael Sabia, who has taken on the post of Deputy Minister of Finance for the Government of Canada. A distinguished academic with extensive leadership experience, Professor Misak will lead the Munk School while the University engages in a search for a Director.

Professor Misak received her D. Phil. in Philosophy from the University of Oxford in 1988. She was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Queen’s University at Kingston in 1988. Professor Misak joined the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy in 1990, receiving tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 1993. In 1997, Professor Misak was promoted to Professor. In 2017, Professor Misak was appointed as University Professor. Professor Misak is the author of numerous papers and five books: Cambridge Pragmatism: From Peirce and James to Ramsey and Wittgenstein (OUP 2016); The American Pragmatists (OUP 2013); Truth, Politics, Morality: Pragmatism and Deliberation (Routledge 2000); Verificationism: Its History and Prospects (Routledge 1995) and Truth and the End of Inquiry: A Peircean Account of Truth (OUP 1991). She has just published a biography of the Cambridge philosopher, mathematician, and economist, Frank Ramsey, who died in 1930 at the age of 26, which Tom Stoppard chose as his book of the year in the TLS. Her research spans American pragmatism, philosophy of science, the history of analytic philosophy, moral and political philosophy, philosophy of medicine, and the history of economics.

Professor Misak has been a Rhodes Scholar; a Humboldt Research Fellow; a Visiting Professor of Philosophy at NYU; a Visiting Fellow at both St. John’s College, Cambridge and Trinity College, Cambridge; the recipient of a Humboldt Research Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Visitor at the Oxford Centre for Life Writing. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Professor Misak brings a wealth of administrative expertise to the role. She has served as Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Acting Director, Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science & Technology, Dean of UTM, Acting Vice-President and Principal, UTM, as well as Deputy Provost, Interim Provost and Vice-President and Provost of the University.
